In English, the word “would” is very versatile; we use it for so many purposes. If you want to speak fluently, it is a huge benefit to have the ability of knowing how to use ‘would.’ Now let’s take a look at the different uses and see some examples.
Use #1 Describing Past Actions and Habits
"Would" is commonly used to talk about past actions or habits that occurred regularly or repeatedly in the past but may not happen in the present.
Examples:
Every Sunday, we would visit our grandparents.
When I was a child, I would play soccer with my friends after school.
When I was in college, I would study late into the night.
He would always help his neighbors with their groceries.
Use #2 Making Polite Requests and Offers
"Would" is often used to make polite requests or offers, adding a sense of politeness to the sentence.
Examples:
