IELTS Speaking Simulation: Module 5

  • This is a mock IELTS speaking exam.

  • The speaking section of the exam contains three parts, as organized below.

  • The whole speaking exam will last approximately 11-14 minutes​.

TIP: When practicing speaking alone, speak out loud. You can also have a friend work with you and ask you these questions to make it feel more like a real exam.

Part One

Part one of the IELTS test is a series of "introduction questions" and usually lasts about 4 minutes. It's best to answer the questions in roughly 3 sentences.

Avoid 1 word or one sentence answers!

  1. What do you usually talk about with your friends?

  2. Who do you most enjoy talking to?

  3. What famous person would you like to have a conversation with?

  4. What genre of music do you like?

  5. Have you ever gone to a concert?

  6. Would you prefer to watch a movie at home or in the cinema?

  7. What types of movies do you enjoy?

Part Two

Part two of the IELTS speaking test is also called the long turn or the 2 minute speech.
You will receive a question topic and will have 1 minute to prepare a 2  minute answer on that topic. You must talk for more than 2 minutes.

Describe an environmental problem in your country.

You should say:

  • What the problem is

  • What the causes of the problem are

  • How it affects people’s lives

And explain what can be done to solve it.

Part three of the IELTS speaking test will be 5 minute discussion on a similar topic as part two. You will not have time to prepare it will be a live discussion. Try to give longer answers with multiple ideas. Do not talk about yourself or your life, they are general questions.

  1. What are some of the main environmental problems in your county?

  2. Why should people be concerned about the environment?

  3. How can people protect the environment?

  4. Do you think money should be spent on protecting animals?

  5. Do you think the government should create laws to reduce pollution?

  6. Who is more responsible for damaging the environment, business or individuals?
