IELTS Speaking Simulation: Module 1

  • This is a mock IELTS speaking exam.

  • The speaking section of the exam contains three parts, as organized below.

  • The whole speaking exam will last approximately 11-14 minutes​.

TIP: When practicing speaking alone, speak out loud. You can also have a friend work with you and ask you these questions to make it feel more like a real exam.

Part One

Part one of the IELTS test is a series of "introduction questions" and usually lasts about 4 minutes. It's best to answer the questions in roughly 3 sentences.

Avoid 1 word or one sentence answers!

  1. Where is your hometown?

  2. What do you like about it?

  3. What do you not like about it?

  4. What is your country famous for?

  5. What can a tourist see or do in your hometown?

  6. Do you like to go fishing?

  7. Is fishing a popular hobby in your country?

Part Two

Part two of the IELTS speaking test is also called the long turn or the 2 minute speech.
You will receive a question topic and will have 1 minute to prepare a 2  minute answer on that topic. You must talk for more than 2 minutes.

Describe a positive change in your life.

You should say:

  • What the change was

  • When it happened

  • How it happened

And explain why it was a positive change for you.

Part Three

Part three of the IELTS speaking test will be 5 minute discussion on a similar topic as part two. You will not have time to prepare it will be a live discussion. Try to give longer answers with multiple ideas. Do not talk about yourself or your life, they are general questions.

  1. Do you think change is always good?

  2. What are some of the major changes that occur to people throughout their lives?

  3. Is your country changing rapidly?

  4. How has technology changed peoples lives in the last few decades?

  5. Why do old people not accept change?
